What is an underpad?
An underpad is an absorbent waterproof pad that is placed on top of sheets to help the bed stay dry. When used correctly, underpads help minimize unnecessary laundering of linens and provide increased cushioning, as well as keep moisture away from the skin. One underpad does not fit all; there are several kinds of underpads for different situations.
What kind of underpad do you need?
One can choose the best underpad based on the level of incontinence and other factors. For instance, for someone with light incontinence and light leakage, underpad are a good fit. For someone at risk for pressure ulcers (bed sores), underpads have extra strength to withstand frequent turning and repositioning.
If someone has a tendency to move and turn in bed, underpads can shift out of the way or bunch up, which lessens the protection and creates risky pressure points. In this case, nursing pads can help – their wings tuck beneath the mattress on both sides to help them stay in place.
In cases of heavy leakage, underpads provide a cost-effective solution. They can absorb much more than retail underpads. underpads provide the highest level of strength, absorbency and cushioning and are among the best underpads that we know of.
How do you manage costs of incontinence care?
We suggest you look at total cost of incontinence management. Retail underpads may be relatively inexpensive; however, frequent repositioning and may damage them, requiring frequent replacement. Relatively small volumes of fluid can overwhelm retail pads, again requiring replacement. Failure of an underpad could also mean laundering the entire set of linens and shampooing and airing out the mattress, which is not only a lot of work but also costly.
On the other hand, more absorbent, stronger underpads require less frequent changes. This can save time and effort and result in better care and possibly lower overall costs.
